Baby Dedication

"Sons are a heritage from the Lord,
Children a reward from Him" Psalms 123
Today was Murphy's first time to church! We could not have asked for better weather too, It was nice and cool out! Many of our friends came up to us to finally meet our sweet little man. I got to meet many new babies today too. In our Sunday school room alone we've had 6 boys born this summer. One little girl! I feel sorry for their future Sunday school teachers...

(Our family with our preacher, Chris Smith)
We walked to the front of the church during service where Chris prayed over our family.

These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things...

1. Swaddle Designs
We have three of these blankets!! We love them! Perfect to wrap baby snugly so it makes them feel like there still inside moms tummy. Murphy can be upset and the minute we swaddle him, he quiets down and goes right to sleep.

They have all sorts of cute designs too!

2. Soothies by Lansinoh
Perfect for the first 2 weeks after starting to nurse your bab
y.
It provides instant cooling relief for sore nipples. Loved them!

3. Baby's Bliss Gripe Water
Gripe water is an herbal supplement used to ease the gas and stomach discomfort. The first "gripe water" was formulated in England in 1851 and used by English nannies. Gripe water was discovered accidentally by William Woodward, an American who was working in England. Murphy loves this stuff!

4. The Happiest Baby on the Block
It's an absolute "must read"!! I read it with Madelyn and picked it up again with Murphy!
Dr. Karp makes perfect sense. He's known for coming up with "The five S's".

The five S's are:
  • Swaddling - Tight swaddling provides the continuous touching and support the fetus experienced while still in Mom's womb.

  • Side/stomach position - You place your baby, while holding her, either on her left side to assist in digestion, or on her stomach to provide reassuring support. Once your baby is happily asleep, you can safely put her in her crib, on her back.

  • Shushing Sounds - These sounds imitate the continual whooshing sound made by the blood flowing through arteries near the womb. This white noise can be in the form of a vacuum cleaner, a hair dryer, a fan and so on. Try a white noise cd.

  • Swinging - Newborns are used to the swinging motions that were present when they were still in Mom's womb. Every step mom took, every movement caused a swinging motion for your baby. After your baby is born, this calming motion, which was so comforting and familiar, is abruptly taken away. Your baby misses the motion and has a difficult time getting used to it not being there. "It's disorienting and unnatural," says Karp. Rocking, car rides, and other swinging movements all can help.

  • Sucking - "Sucking has its effects deep within the nervous system," notes Karp, "and triggers the calming reflex and releases natural chemicals within the brain." This "S" can be accomplished with breast, bottle, pacifier or even a finger.

6 wk appointment

(Dr. Jeff Draughn, Kat, and Murphy)

I had my 6 week appointment today. Everything went well! I'm losing weight and Murphys gaining...I love the fact that breastfeeding does that! I weigh less now than I did before I got pregnant with him! "Yippee!!"

I wanted a quick picture of Dr. Draughn,
Kat (Catherine) and Murphy. Murphy slept through the entire visit until I got him out of his car seat carrier for the picture. As soon as I handed him to Dr. Draughn for the picture, Murphy started stretching...well when Murphy stretched he let out to biggest toot!! Dr. Draughn said "I hope he just didn't load his pants!" We all laughed it off... As he handed my baby back to me I notice that there is a very small spot on Murphy's outfit where poop was coming out the back of his diaper... No one notices but me. I looked Dr. Draughn's coat over and did not see any marks! "Whew!!! Saved!" So..That was very embarrassing! Thank you my child!

I will miss seeing/talking to them every week!

What's going on with us you ask?

We're doing pretty well! I've started getting out of the house a little lately. I just went to the grocery store today for the first time since he was born!! Thanks to all our wonderful friends and family that has brought us meals for the past month! (God Bless them!)

It is taking me longer to regain my strength and my body to heal this time. I try to take a nap while Maddie and Murphy take a nap. Poor Shane is still carrying lots of the cleaning load. He's in good spirits about it though!(Maddie requested to hold Murphy while Joe Joe was holding him)

Madelyn is starting to warm up to Murphy now. I walked into the den and saw where she had placed a soft baby doll and unicorn beside Murphy while he was sitting in his bouncy seat! She said that they made him happy! She really doesn't like it when he crys. She comes and tells me and I can tell that she is extremely bothered by it. (She has always hated loud sounds) She's been acting out towards Shane and I but we're trying to work with her and understand whats going on in her world.
She starts school on Sept. 7. She is SO excited to go!!! She asks everyday if today is the day! I think that she'll be much happier getting out of the house too! She's very much a girl that likes to go, go, go!
I've been having problems with breastfeeding for the past two weeks...I know what your thinking...from the looks of that baby, it can't be true...well it is! At 2 weeks 6 days I woke up with Mastitis. I started antibiotics. I felt lots better after 3 days. During this time I was running a high temp. Murphy for some reason did not want to nurse at nights. He would latch on, suck, swallow, come off and cry. He would do this over and over again during a feeding. He also is making a sound while feeding like he's allowing a rush of air to come in. One of my biggest problems is that I make entirely too much milk! So I went to Baptist Hospital for a visit with the lactation Specialist. She explained our problem like this...Murphy is like a kid with his mouth wide open under a running faucet. He is not having to do any work for his food! Crazy right?! She sent us home with a Haberman Feeder (special needs bottle) We use it twice a day. She also told me a few tricks to help him nurse better. It has worked miracles for us! He is now sleeping MUCH better! He is altogether a much happier baby! Before hand he was taking in too much air and swallowing it! It really didn't matter how much we burped him, he still took in lots of air which made him extremely gassy! I could hear and feel all the air bubbles in his belly...poor little guy...which just made him hurt so bad that he would cry in pain! He is still not nursing perfectly but we're working on it! By the way..Murphy weighed 11lbs 10oz that day!
